Conference: Russian foreign policies in the Middle-East and the Issue of Kurds in Syria

The head of the department of Russia, Central Asia and Cocassion Studies attended a conference looking at the Kurds in Syria and the role of Russia in the region was held in Irbil, Iraq on 20-21 October 2016.

Seminar: The Typology of Islam in the World

There was a seminar held by the Iranian World Studies Association on “The Typology of Islam in the World” by Tariq Ramadan on Sunday 30th October 2016.

Apart from students, the Dean of the faculty and other key members of the academic board also attended this seminar.

Dr Seyyed Hadi Borhani from the department of Palestinian Studies gave the opening speech. He opened the seminar by a brief biography on Tariq Ramadan and the topic of the seminar noting, “Tariq Ramadan is one the prominent scholars in the filed of Islamic thought in the West and he was among the top 100 figures of the Time magazine in 2004.”

The keynote speaker of the seminar, Tariq Ramadan started by explaining his situation as a Muslim and minority living n the West and the challenges he faces.

He pointed out that “variety was one of the strengths of Islam and using it in the correct way would give power to a Islamic society and it is what we cannot use properly that becomes a weakness”.

He concluded his speech by stating that “we should be active and not just sit criticizing and analyzing the situation, and of course there is a price to pay. The Quran has commanded us to act many times, I have done so and paid the price and I am proud of it”.

“We should have courage in our society and believe in difference between being open-minded and dogmatic.”

The seminar ended with a question and answer session with the audience.
