Iraq Studies
The purpose of establishing the interdisciplinary field of Iraq Studies is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the social, political, cultural, and economic aspects of Iraq. The program aims to train specialists who can work and conduct research in governmental and non-governmental institutions at national and international levels.
The necessity for this field arises from the deep and complex relations between Iran and Iraq. Iraq is one of Iran’s most important neighbors, sharing its longest land border. Consequently, the two countries have long-standing commonalities and significant economic, political, social, cultural, and religious ties. Among these ties, the shared Shia Islamic faith and the presence of sacred Shia shrines in Iraq and holy cities in Iran are especially notable.
Therefore, a thorough study of Iraq in its various dimensions is essential to foster productive and purposeful relations. Iraq has also historically been a central stage for many regional transformations. Today, due to ongoing internal and international challenges, including war, Iraq is experiencing new developments whose effects on neighboring countries—especially Iran—cannot be overlooked.
Thus, a broad knowledge of Iraq’s political currents and governance trends can greatly assist decision-making processes in the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is hoped that graduates of this program, beyond being capable of administrative and executive work related to Iraq, will also be able to undertake scholarly research and expert analysis in this field.
